{"id":74831,"date":"2022-03-11T13:39:45","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T13:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sweetmelodiesfm.com\/?p=74831"},"modified":"2022-03-11T13:39:45","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T13:39:45","slug":"government-has-released-gh20-million-to-farms-affected-by-bird-flu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sweetmelodiesfm.com\/government-has-released-gh20-million-to-farms-affected-by-bird-flu\/","title":{"rendered":"Government has released GH20 million to farms affected by bird flu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Government has released GH\u00a220million to compensate poultry farmers affected by the outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Disbursement is to begin immediately and is under the first tranche of a budgeted GH\u00a244million approved last December in support of farms hit by the flu, Minister of Food and Agriculture,\u00a0Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, said in Accra.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-rec td-a-rec-id-content_inlineleft  tdi_2 td_block_template_11\">\n<div class=\"td-visible-desktop\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTo ensure all affected farmers from July to December 31, 2021 receive some compensation for any losses incurred as a result of the outbreak, the ministry has agreed to pay GH\u00a230 for a mature bird, GH\u00a220 for a pullet, GH\u00a210 per chick, GH\u00a280 for a bag of feed and GH\u00a210 for a crate of eggs based on the amount available immediately,\u201d he said at a press briefing on disbursement of the compensation.<\/p>\n<p>About 203 farms are expected to benefit from the GH\u20b517million that has been dedicated for compensation payment out of the total amount. They include an outstanding 36 poultry farms affected by bird flu between 2015 and 2018, and 167 from July to December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Since December, 554,638 birds affected by the flu were culled \u2013 with 2,548 crates of eggs and 1,701 bags of feed also destroyed for being contaminated. Affected farmers are expected to present Veterinary Services Directorate certificates of destruction to the finance department of the ministry to be paid.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetmelodiesfm.com\/tumu-experiences-bird-flu-outbreak\/\">Tumu experiences bird flu outbreak<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetmelodiesfm.com\/bird-flu-h5-subtype-confirmed-in-kpone-katamanso\/\">Bird Flu: H5 subtype confirmed in Kpone-Katamanso<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To ensure the money serves the intended purpose, he said, the ministry has built a database of all affected farmers since 2016 to date to ease payment of compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he said, a biometric registration and certification of all poultry farms is currently ongoing in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This, he added, is part of modernising poultry farming in the country and enhancing availability of accurate data for planning, targetting for support and payment of compensations when the need arises in the future.<\/p>\n<p>He therefore urged all farmers to participate in the exercise aimed at building a comprehensive database of poultry farmers.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers, Victor Oppong Adjei, thanked government for the support and efforts to streamline the poultry value chain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recruitment of new extension officers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To improve on extension services across the country, Dr. Akoto revealed that the ministry has recruited 2,700 extension officers \u2013 the majority of whom came from the Agriculture Module of the Nation Builders Corps.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-g-rec td-g-rec-id-content_bottom tdi_4 td_block_template_11 \"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government has released GH\u00a220million to compensate poultry farmers affected by the outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu).
