We respect concerns and opinions of the people – EC Official

Date:

Ms Rita Avevor, Adaklu District Electoral officer Tuesday stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) respects the opinions and concerns raised by sections of Ghanaians in view of the limited voter registration exercise.

She, however, added that the people should also respect the Commission’s policies.

Ms. Avevor was responding to a question by the Ghana News Agency at the registration centre at Adaklu Waya as to why the registration was not decentralised to the Electoral Areas as suggested by a section of the populace.

Some prospective registrants the GNA spoke to noted that the registration should have been decentralized to the various Electoral areas instead of limiting it to the offices of the EC.

They contended that this was going to be a financial burden on parents as most of the applicants were students.

They said for the Ghana Education Service to give a four-day break for students to go home and register immediately after resuming school came with a huge financial burden to parents.

Ms. Avevor told the GNA that the registration started smoothly at 0700hours but there was a system challenge, which was rectified at about 1230 hours.

“Apart from this brief challenge, everything is moving smoothly,” she stated.

As at the time of the visit of the GNA at 1315 hours only five applicants were registered and there was no queue.

Agents of the two leading political parties were at the Centre and security personnel were there.
