Two Regent University Alumni Elected as Members of Ghana’s 8th Parliament

Date:

Two alumni of Regent University College of Science and Technology have been elected to serve as Members of Ghana’s 8th Parliament.

Hon. Daniel Nsala Wakpal, is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kpandai constituency, in the Northern region of Ghana. He graduated from Regent in 2012, with a BSc. Management with Computing degree.

Hon. Sylvester Tetteh, is the Member of Parliament for the Bortiano-Ngleshie Amanfrom constituency, in the Greater Accra region. He graduated from Regent in 2010, also with a BSc. in Management with Computing. Daniel contested on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while Sylvester was on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party

A winner in the parliamentary elections is determined using the First Past the Post voting system. Elected members serve a four year term after which they must present themselves to their constituents for re-election. Parliament acts as the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. The functions of parliament include law-making, the control of public funds, oversight of the executive branch of government, and deliberation on policy issues.

Two hundred and seventy-five individuals are voted to represent Ghanaians in each of the constituencies. The MP serves as the communication link between his or her constituents and Government. Through various parliamentary mechanisms such as Question Time, Statements, Motions, debate on policy/bills, among others, an MP has the opportunity to draw attention to developments in his or her constituency and explore avenues for socio-economic development of the constituency.

“I am extremely grateful to all those who generously contributed their time and effort in getting us to reach this far”, said Hon. Sylvester Tetteh.

“I want to thank my constituents for honouring me with their vote in the election. Being an effective legislator involves listening to constituents, translating their concerns into workable proposals, and building consensus to implement them. I cannot do this job without the involvement and openness of the people I represent,” he asserted.

We congratulate Hon. Sylvester Tetteh and Hon. Daniel Wakpal, and wish them successful and impactful terms of office.
