To address the businessman’s alleged use of bribes, Appiah Kubi will appear before OSP today.

Date:

Andy Appiah Kubi, a member of parliament for Asante-Akim North, will appear before the special prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, today, May 10, in relation to claims that a wealthy businessman attempted to bribe lawmakers who sought to unseat the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a media interview, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (MP, Suame, Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs) and Andy Appiah-Kubi (MP, Asante Akim North) claimed that a well-known businessman in Ghana attempted to use money to sway the decisions of some Majority group members regarding their demand for the dismissal of the leadership of the Finance Ministry.

The claimed wealthy businessman will likely be revealed at today’s meeting with the Special Prosecutor, along with the next steps that will be taken.

Background

In 2022, Andy Appiah Kubi and more than 50 New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers demanded the Finance Minister’s resignation.

After speaking with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about the issue, the MPs later changed their minds.

They bowed to the President’s pleadings for the Minister to continue serving so that Ghana’s rescue agreement with the IMF could be finalised (IMF).

Later, it was claimed by Andy Appiah-Kubi (MP, Asante Akim North) and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (MP, Suame, Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs) that a purported businessman attempted to sway the group with money brought to Parliament in an effort to persuade the MPs to reverse their decision.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, declared that the Parliament would look into the bribery claim made against the well-known businessman who shall remain nameless.

He told the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra, “The alleged bribery has come to my attention, and we will examine to see if it is real and the motivation behind it.

On November 3, 2022, the pressure group Occupy Ghana asked the Special Prosecutor to look into the claims.
