The Executive Committee of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) CRIB Project has urged the citizenry to continue to adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols after they get vaccinated.

It said observing the protocols was necessary because most people in the country had not yet been vaccinated, hence the possibility of the virus spreading if the precautionary measures were not adhered to.

The COVID-19 Response and Institutional Capacity Building (CRIB) Project is a two-year project by the CHAG, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and UKAID in 40 districts.

Dr Eric Gyamfi, a Public Health Physician Specialist on behalf of the Committee, said the Covid-19 vaccines were very safe just like all the other medications approved by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
“They are as safe as the various pain killers, hypertension and diabetes medicines approved for use in the country in our various hospitals and pharmacies and they go through the same stringent safety checks as any other medicines,” he said.

He said vaccines worked by boosting the capacity of the immune system to fight infections and also helped human bodies to develop immunity to germs.

Dr Gyamfi said getting vaccinated was the only proven way of ending the pandemic adding that when a herd immunity was attained, it would prevent the vaccine from further spread.

He said people who had active Covid-19 infection could not be vaccinated but could only do so once they met the criteria for de-isolation and without any symptoms.

The CHAG is represented in the Kpando Municipality by the Margret Marquart Catholic Hospital, working with the Kpando Municipal Health Directorate and the Municipal Assembly to achieve set targets.

The vaccination of Ghanaians in COVID-19 hotspots in Ghana with the Johnson & Johnson vaccines is expected to end today, Friday, August 20, 2021.

The five-day exercise, which started on Monday, August 16, 2021, was carried out in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. It targeted areas, where health officials say, are epicentres.

A lot of the vaccination centres recorded high patronage.

The 177,600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines are the first batch of the Africa Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) initiative delivered to Ghana.

Ghana recently took delivery of another 249,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the UK government.

The vaccines, which were delivered on Wednesday [August 18, 2021] through the COVAX facility, were received at the Kotoka International Airport by a Deputy Minister of Health, Tina Mensah, a Representative of the UK High Commission, Mr. John Whittle & the UNICEF Representative and other partners.

UNICEF said the donation is to “support the ongoing vaccination campaign”.

The vaccines were subsequently transported to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for storage and subsequent use.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has however said priority will be given to the persons who took the first jab of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March 2021 and are yet to receive their second jabs.

Over 500 people received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine on the first day of the five-day exercise at the Tema General Hospital on Monday,Mr. Edward Sagoe, the Administrator told the Ghana News Agency in Tema on Tuesday.

He said, “So far so good” the patronage of the ongoing exercise has been so good, there has been massive turnout for the exercise.

“In anticipation of the massive turnout the management of the Hospital created three vaccination enclaves within to decongest and also speed up the administering of the vaccine.

“Whatever doses or vaccine we received from the Directorate is what we administer”.

According to Mr. Sagoe, once Food and Drug Authority (FDA) had certified the Johnson and Johnson drug, it was good to go for its purpose and they were mandated to administer only one dosage.

He said the Johnson and Johnson vaccine was different from the AstraZeneca vaccine which was administered earlier, therefore the public must understand the process, “We are only giving one jab, per person”.

He advised the public to patronize the vaccination exercise because the jab was an immune booster and was an opportunity fight COVID-19.

He added that, none of those who received the vaccines complained of any side effects, but encouraged those vaccinated to watch out for any symptoms, especially when they get home and if there’s any major side effects, they should report back to the Hospital for medical care.

The Johnson and Johnson vaccines which was administered at the Hospital (TGH) under the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Regional Health Directorate (RHD) was expected to boost the immune system and strengthen their bodies against the novel coronavirus and its related symptoms.

A total of 101,500 residents of the Tema Metropolis are expected to receive the single shot Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, which started on Monday August 16 and expected to end on Friday August 20, 2021.

Checks by the Ghana News Agency at the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate revealed that a total of 20,300 vials of the vaccine were allocated to the Metropolis with each vail estimated to be used for the vaccination of five persons.

The GNA gathered that the 20,300 would be shared among the five centres based on their patronage to ensure that eligible residents get the needed protection against the virus.

The five centres are: premises of the Health Directorate, Tema General Hospital for Tema South area, TMA Maternity and Children’s Clinic for Community One area, while Bethel Hospital and Bankuman CHPS Compound respectively serve residents of Tema North, and Manhean.

The Johnson and Johnson vaccine according to the Ghana Health Directorate is for persons aged 18 years and above with the exception of pregnant women, and those who have already received Astrazeneca or SPUTNIK V vaccines.
