US gymnastics star Simone Biles won her fifth gold medal in the women’s floor final Sunday to conclude her “best ever” world championships and take her career record to 25 medals.

Biles, who won the beam title earlier in the day, also claimed an unrivalled 19th world gold following her previous successes in the team, all-around and vault events in Stuttgart.

“This is really the best worlds performance I have ever put out,” she said after finishing her fifth world championships with five titles in six events.

The 22-year-old plans to celebrate when she gets back home to Texas, where “my mom usually likes to throw a worlds party — whether I want one or not,” she joked.

Biles was crowned world floor champion for the fifth time after winning by a full point from team-mate Sunisa Lee, who earned silver with Russia’s Angelina Melnikova taking bronze.

“I just couldn’t move at the end, I was so tired,” Biles confessed after her sixth and final event in Stuttgart.

Her double gold success Sunday came within a two-hour spell after earlier winning the beam final with Liu Tingting, 19, taking silver and 16-year-old Li Shijia claiming bronze.

“It meant a lot,” said Biles of her gold on the beam. She had to settle for bronze in the event at the 2016 Olympics and last year’s world championships in Doha.

“I’m thrilled with that performance, it was probably the highlight” of the week.

Biles worked hard on the beam to rebuild her confidence in the discipline, so “to go out there and nail the routine felt really good”.

Sunday’s golds made Biles the most decorated gymnast in world championship history, surpassing the previous all-time record of 23 world medals won by men’s star Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus in the 1990s.

This is the first time she has finished a world championships with five golds, but she has said she is “99 percent” sure Stuttgart will be her last.

Simone Biles won the floor title for the fifth time in her career at the world gymnastics championships on Sunday in Stuttgart

The only blot on her near-perfect record in south-west Germany came in Saturday’s uneven bars final when she finished fifth, but both Biles and her coach Laurent Landi were delighted with her week.

Less than 10 months before the Tokyo Games, Biles is on course to retain the Olympic team, floor, vault and all-around titles she won in Rio.

“She’s incredible, she was here to do a job and she did exactly what she trained for,” said Frenchman Landi.

“She has shown to herself and everybody else that she is consistent, not only in training, but when it counts.

“If she does this for 12 more months, she will be very, very successful.”

Landi said the hard work Biles has also put into her mental preparation paid off as she patiently waited despite a lengthy delay before her floor routine while judges reviewed a rival’s performance.

– Mental edge –

“In her head, she’s fine, doesn’t get too upset, even if there are mistakes in training it doesn’t bother her, so she was very confident for this final,” he said.

Russia’s Nikita Nagornyy also stood out as one to watch in Tokyo next year by completing a hat-trick of gold medals, adding the men’s vault title Sunday to his all-around and team success.

The 22-year-old finished just ahead of team-mate Artur Dalaloyan by 0.033 points in a repeat of Friday’s all-around final where Nagornyy took gold and Dalaloyan, the men’s 2018 world champion, silver.

Dalaloyan also took bronze on the horizontal bar, behind Brazilian gold medallist Arthur Mariano, for his fourth medal this week, completing the set after an all-around silver and team gold.

American world record holder Lilly King hit out Friday at swimming’s main authority over its doping protocols, as claims China’s Sun Yang destroyed blood samples stunned athletes before the world championships in South Korea.

Asked about her thoughts on a leaked FINA doping panel report — alleging China’s triple Olympic champion Sun had smashed vials of his own blood when testers visited him last year — King pulled no punches.

“Personally I’m not comfortable with FINA’s approach to doping control and what we’re doing to control it,” she told reporters.

“As we’ve seen, I think all of us would say that we’re racing dopers at some point and we shouldn’t really have to say that,” she added two days before the start of the pool competition in Gwangju.

“First they can start with not letting people who have smashed blood vials in tests compete in your meets — that’s really sketchy.

A leaked FINA doping panel report alleges China’s triple Olympic champion Sun Yang had smashed vials of his own blood when testers visited him last year

“It’s kind of sad that we all have raced dopers and they’re all probably swimming in this meet. I don’t know what needs to change but something does.”

King previously hit out at Russian rival Yulia Efimova — who had previously served a 16-month ban for taking a banned steroid — after beating her to gold in the 100 metres breaststroke in the 2016 Rio Olympic final.

King, then 19, refused to shake Efimova’s hand and, with the Russian in tears beside her at an emotional Rio press conference, also blasted the selection of convicted doper Justin Gatlin to the American Olympic track and field team.

– ‘Pretty intense’ –

After FINA told AFP earlier this week that Sun faced a September hearing with sport’s highest tribunal, following an appeal by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over the decision to let him compete in Korea, King tweeted: “Oh Good. Conveniently after World Championships.”

King, who holds the women’s world record for the 50 and 100m breaststroke, will be looking to retain her world titles in both events in Korea.

After completing a hat-trick of victories over Efimova at a FINA Champions series stop in Indianapolis last month, King revealed there was still no love lost between the rivals.

“It’s still pretty intense but I would say it’s a little bit less awkward than it was a few years ago,” she smiled.

“We still love to race each other and I still love to win so we’ll see where it goes. Hopefully I’ll come out on top.”

Caeleb Dressel, one of the biggest names in swimming, echoed his fellow American’s concerns over doping.

“The sport has to be clean,” he said. “It has to be an even playing field between everybody.

“Even if the testers show up at 11 at night or six in the morning, I’ll give them clean urine and clean blood,” added Dressel, who captured a remarkable seven gold medals at the last world championships in Budapest two years ago.

“I’ve had a few (tests) — I don’t know if it’s been 40 or if it’s been 30, but I’m fine with that. I welcome the protocol that they do have.”

Fernando Alonso’s latest bid for Indianapolis 500 glory ended in failure on Sunday after the two-time Formula One world champion failed to qualify for the US motorsport showpiece.

The 37-year-old Spaniard was eliminated by young US driver Kyle Kaiser on the final run of the rain-delayed “Last Row Shootout” qualifying session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

McLaren driver Alonso had been chasing a victory at the Brickyard in a bid to become only the second driver after Britain’s Graham Hill to claim the Triple Crown of motorsport, with wins in the Monaco F1 Grand Prix, 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance and Indy 500.

But Alonso’s attempt to add the last remaining piece of the treble to his trophy cabinet was snuffed out in a dramatic qualifying session.

“This type of challenge, they can bring you a lot of success and you can be part of the history of the sport or you can be really disappointed,” he said. “Today is one of those, but I prefer to be here than to be like millions and millions of other people, at home watching TV.

“I prefer to try,” he said.

McLaren engineers had worked feverishly on the Spaniard’s car in an effort to give him a fighting chance of qualifying for next week’s race, overhauling the setup after a troubled week in Indianapolis.

The tweaks looked to have given Alonso a shot as he took to the track and posted an average time of 227.353mph for his four laps, putting him second behind Canada’s James Hinchcliffe.

However Alonso was left sweating after Sage Karam came out next and roared to the top of the six-driver session with an average speed of 227.740mph.

Karam’s time dropped Alonso down to third fastest, and with only the top three making the cut to complete the 33-car field, the Spanish star was left with a nervous wait to see if either of the two remaining drivers could better his time.

– Emotional 48 hours –

Alonso watched anxiously on a television monitor in the pits as Mexico’s Carlin driver Patricio O’Ward failed to pip him, clocking an average speed of 227.092mph.

That left Kaiser with the chance to claim a famous scalp on the final run.

The 23-year-old Juncos Racing driver from California didn’t disappoint, sweeping around with an average speed of 227.372 to edge out Alonso by the tightest of margins.

“I don’t think I can wrap my mind around what we just did,” Kaiser said afterwards.

“All the credit to the team. They’ve been working non-stop to get this car ready. I’m so proud of them, so proud of everybody that helped make this happen.”

Kaiser’s qualification had looked in doubt earlier this week, when he crashed heavily in Friday’s practice.

However he insisted he had never lost hope of being able to qualify.

“I did imagine it and I’m so happy it came to fruition,” he said. “But I knew it was going to be a lot of work and the team put in the work. It’s been the most emotional 48 hours of my life.”

In qualifying to determine the order of the first three rows on the grid, France’s Simon Pagenaud swept to pole position in the “Fast Nine” session.

Pagenaud, the 2016 IndyCar champion, gave Penske its first Indy 500 pole in seven years after he roared around with an average speed of 229.992mph.

Pagenaud claimed pole ahead of three Ed Carpenter Racing drivers, with Ed Carpenter second quickest and Spencer Pigot third fastest. Ed Jones was fourth fastest.

“If you are second you are nothing,” said former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly. But rarely can a runner-up have been more proud of falling just short than Liverpool in the Premier League this season.

Shankly won three league titles on Merseyside in the pre-Premier League era and built the foundations for two decades of dominance that endured even after he departed.

Yet even he could not conceive of amassing 97 points in a league season, let alone that mark only being good enough for second place.

Liverpool’s points tally was not just a club record, but the third-highest in Premier League history, behind only Manchester City’s 98 this season and City’s haul of 100 points in romping to the title last year.

Unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp’s men, it will be Pep Guardiola’s champions they have to beat again to end a 30-year wait for a league title next season.

Virgil van Dijk has been a huge influence for Liverpool this season

“As long as City are around, with the quality they have, the financial power and all that stuff, it’s not that any other team will pass them easily,” said Klopp, whose side lost only one league game all season, to City in January, and still missed out.

“You need to be very, very close to perfection to win the Premier League as long as this is the case.”

City’s wealth in the decade since the club was bought by Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, has transformed the blue half of Manchester into serial winners.

– City cash –

Sunday’s title triumph was their fourth in the past eight seasons, but City have not always made the most of their new-found wealth, drifting under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini after previous title triumphs.

Guardiola is the point of difference. The Catalan has now won the league in eight of his 10 seasons as a top-flight coach in three different countries with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (left) and Sadio Mane shared the Premier League Golden Boot award with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Worryingly for the competition, Guardiola insisted City will only get stronger next season.

But the notoriously intense Catalan also has a history of not overstaying his welcome.

Next season will be his fourth in Manchester, matching his longest managerial stint so far at Barca, after which he required a year’s sabbatical, citing exhaustion.

“I cannot deny I am so tired, but at the same time winning the title gives you a lot of energy,” said Guardiola on Sunday. “Winning is so addictive.”

Liverpool’s fate in the coming years may ultimately depend on how long the drug of winning sustains Guardiola at the Etihad.

There will also be a fear on Merseyside that Liverpool have come close before, most notably under Rafael Benitez a decade ago and Brendan Rodgers in 2013/14 and failed to take the next step a season later.

The stars may not align the same way next season. Huge goalkeeping errors from Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris kept Liverpool on City’s coattails with late winners.

City may have sped away into the distance had Riyad Mahrez not blasted a late penalty over the bar when the sides met at Anfield in a 0-0 draw in October, while the champions suffered shock defeats in December to Crystal Palace and Leicester thanks to wonder strikes from Andros Townsend and Ricardo Pereira.

However, unlike previous near misses when Xabi Alonso and Luis Suarez soon departed for Spain, this Liverpool side look built for the long term.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker have been tied down to long-term contracts.

Flying full-backs Andy Robertson, 25, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, 20, should only get better with age.

Big summer signings Fabinho and Naby Keita grew as the campaign went on and should kick on in their second season in the Premier League.

“We knocked on the door pretty hard this season,” said Robertson.

“They know we are here and hopefully here to stay now. Next season I am sure we won’t lose anyone and, if we replicate this season, we can’t ask much more.”

Sometimes, second is more than nothing.

Joel Embiid finished with 33 points as the Philadelphia 76ers routed the Toronto Raptors 116-95 on Thursday to seize a 2-1 lead in their NBA second-round playoff series.

Embiid also had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for his 12th double-double in 15 career playoff games.

“I was trying not to force anything and if I didn’t have it I just moved it to my teammates,” he said. “We wanted to put our foot down in the fourth and we did that by making stops.”

Jimmy Butler added 22 points, nine assists, and nine rebounds while JJ Redick delivered 15 points for the Sixers, who have won two straight including a gritty 94-89 victory in game two three nights ago.

Game four will be played in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Kawhi Leonard paced the Raptors’ attack with 33 points while Pascal Siakam added 20.

Leonard has scored at least 30 points in five of Toronto’s eight playoff games this season, including all three games against Philadelphia.

Embiid was at his theatrical best, jiggling his shoulders and rocking a mock baby after scoring baskets.

“I need it. When I have fun, my game just changes,” he said. “I have always been told that if I don’t smile during the game that I’m either having a bad game or I’m not into it.

“I know that to get my game going, I have to have fun on the court.”

Philadelphia led 64-53 at halftime thanks in large part to Embiid’s 18 points. The Sixers also shot eight of 14 from three-point range in the opening half.

Leonard powered the Raptors with 17 points in the first half and continued his fine play in the third quarter with another 14 points to keep Toronto within eight (89-81) heading into the fourth.

“We’ve got to help him,” Kyle Lowry said. “Myself especially, I’ve got to help him score more. I’ve got to help him on the floor. We’ve all got to help him. He’s playing unbelievable right now.

“We’re not giving him any help.”

Embiid drained his third three-pointer and the 76ers charged to a 94-82 lead early in the fourth.

Butler upped his scoring prowess with a couple of baskets and the lead was stretched to 100-82 with nine minutes left in the fourth.

Butler then slammed home a dunk, got fouled and put the Sixers ahead 108-84 with 5:51 left.

The Raptors missed 11 of their first 12 shots in the fourth. Toronto was hurt by poor shooting and rebounding.

“I think we got outplayed in just about every area we could get outplayed. In overall physicality, energy, cutting, rebounding, passing, all that kind of stuff,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said.

“We got thoroughly outplayed and it’s been a while… since you’ve seen this team play this way.”

Ross Taylor whispered a prayer and an apology to the late Martin Crowe Monday as he overtook his mentor’s century tally during an exceptional innings of 200 that put New Zealand in a strong position in the second Test against Bangladesh.

Taylor’s 18th Test century, one more than Crowe laid the foundation for New Zealand’s 432 for six declared in the first innings of the rain-disrupted Test in Wellington.

At stumps, Bangladesh were 80 for three in their second innings, needing another 141 runs on the final day to make New Zealand bat again.

The number four’s sterling effort was his third Test double hundred and achieved his long-held ambition to fulfil Crowe’s prophecy that Taylor would one day overtake the late great batsman’s mark.

“I told Hogan (Crowe) ‘my apologies’ for taking so long to get there,” said Taylor who scored his 17th century in 2017, nearly two years after Crowe died from cancer.

“Seventeen was such a big number when I just started playing cricket. Once I got there it was probably a bit of a relief and then I didn’t kick on. It was probably a little in my subconscious.”

Taylor had discussed breaking Crowe’s record with a sports psychologist who told him to acknowledge it would always be there and “now it’s nice to knock it off and just go out there and play”.

In the course of his innings, Taylor also passed Crowe’s record for the most runs scored at the Basin Reserve “so he’s probably a bit annoyed with that one,” the batting mainstay quipped.

Taylor, who was dropped twice on 20, featured in a 172-run stand with Kane Williamson for the third wicket and shared a 216-run partnership with Henry Nicholls for the fourth.

Nicholls made 107, his fifth century, while Williamson, who now holds the New Zealand record for the most centuries with 20, battled with an injured shoulder to reach 74 before he was dismissed.

Williamson took no further part in the day’s play and went for a scan on the shoulder which proved inconclusive and he will have a second scan on Tuesday.

Highly-rated Charles Leclerc set the fastest time of winter testing on Thursday as Ferrari again laid down a powerful marker ahead of the new Formula One season.

The 21-year-old Leclerc clocked 1min 16.231sec off 138 laps with Thailand’s Alexander Albon, in a Toro Rosso, the only other driver to dip below 1min 17sec on the penultimate day of testing ahead of the season-opener in Melbourne on March 17.

Thursday’s action also saw crashes for Pierre Gasly in a Red Bull and Lance Stroll behind the wheel of a Racing Point.

“The goal today was to have a reference on the softer tyres,” said Leclerc who is in his debut season with Ferrari where he will partner four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

“There is still a lot of work before Melbourne, but lap after lap I am more and more comfortable with the car.”

In terms of where he slots into the team hierarchy, Leclerc said it was normal that Vettel would be favoured in “a 50/50 situation”, as described recently by the team’s new chief Mattia Binotto.

“But he also said that it could change if I’m faster than Seb (Vettel) so I’m going to do everything to be faster.”

Gasly suffered a heavy crash in the Red Bull which teammate Max Verstappen was due to drive on Friday while Stroll’s detour off the circuit brought a halt to the session.

“I made a mistake at Turn Nine and basically lost control of the car,” said Gasly who also crashed in testing last week.

“It was a big accident, one of the biggest I have had.”

World champion Lewis Hamilton was only 10th in his Mercedes with teammate Valtteri Bottas three places further back.

“From last week we have been able to improve the general balance of the car over the speed range but we can still do better,” said Bottas.

“It is not a perfect car yet but you can feel the potential is there. It has quite a small sweet spot. In some areas such as low speed corners the car feels better than last year.”

Test times

Charles Leclerc (MON/Ferrari) 1:16.231 (138 laps), Alexander Albon (THA/Toro Rosso-Honda) 1:16.882 (118 laps), Lando Norris (GBR/McLaren-Renault) 1:17.084 (84 laps), Pierre Gasly (FRA/Red Bull-Honda) 1:17.091 (65 laps), Daniel Ricciardo (AUS/Renault) 1:17.204 (65 laps), Nico Hulkenberg (GER/Renault) 1:17.496 (73 laps), Lance Stroll (CAN/Racing Point/Mercedes) 1:17.556 (103 laps), Antonio Giovinazzi (ITA/Alfa-Romeo Racing-Ferrari) 1:17.639 (71 laps), Romain Grosjean (FRA/Haas-Ferrari) 1:17.854 (16 laps), Lewis Hamilton (GBR/Mercedes): 1:18.097 (85), George Russell (GBR/Williams-Mercedes) 1:18.130 (140 laps), Kevin Magnussen (DEN/Haas-Ferrari) 1:18.199 (53 laps), Valtteri Bottas (FIN/Mercedes) 1:18.862 (97 laps)
