The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has urged the Ghana Education Service and the authorities of the Achimota School to respect the High Court ruling and admit the Rastafarian students.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzi, the National Chairman, GNECC, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

The Coalition is urging the Ministry of Education to call for a national stakeholders dialogue to introducenational guidelines on such issues.

This, the statement explained would ensure that the best interest of all Ghanaian children and other stakeholders were catered for.

Stop posting my nude pictures on social media-Akuapem Poloo

Bible Believers Church hands over classroom block to Duunyin community

Achimota School Board to appeal court ruling

On May 31, 2021, the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court gave a ruling in favour of the students.

The court ruled that the religious rights of the applicants had been violated by the Achimota School as they sought to enforce time-tested and well-known rules of the School.

The court further directed the School to admit the two applicants.

The Achimota School Board disagreed with the ruling and directed its Lawyers to appeal against the ruling.
Lawyer for the two Rastafarian students, Tyrone Iras Marhguy and Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea dragged the Achimota School Board of Governors, the Minister of Education, Ghana Education Service, and the Attorney General, to court for refusing to enroll them with the explanation that they had to shave their dreadlocks in accordance with the School’s regulations.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, was surprised by the decision of Achimota School to take a unilateral decision to appeal the court ruling without engaging the Ministry.

He said there would be a meeting Wednesday with the headmistress of Achimota School on the issue.

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has urged stakeholders in the impasse over the right of a Wesley Girls High School Muslim student to fast during the Ramadan to resolve the matter in with objectivity in calmness.

“We believe that each party in their respective viewpoints do wish the best for the child concerned. But this can only be done in the midst of calm,” it said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, and signed by its Executive Council Chairman, Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzi.

“History has shown that, whenever decisions were made out of turbulence, other problems were given birth to,” it said.

The Coalition also urged the stakeholders, especially policy makers and implementers, to agree on developing national policies to serve as a guide to the issue and similar issues to ensure that all stakeholders adhered to the resolution in the best interest of the child.

47,835 households to receive ITNs in Techiman South Municipality

Minister lauds Zoomlion’s waste recycling project

GMA calls for swift prosecution of organizers of Christ Embassy’s Pneumatic Night Event

The GNECC, however, expressed concern that the Wesley Girls High School did not heed the GES’ directive to allow the student to fast during this Ramadan.

This, it said, might set a precedence for other schools to disregard the Supervisory Agency in other matters.

“Moreover, the Coalition believes there is the need for all stakeholders to seek guiding interpretations to the provisions in the 1992 Constitution, Article 14, (1) (e) which indicates that “no person shall be deprived of their personal liberty/rights except: for the purpose of the education or welfare of a person who has not attained the age of eighteen years”.

The government has refuted allegations by the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) that it was planning to privatise public schools.

It has, therefore, challenged the coalition to substantiate its privatisation claim or apologise to Ghanaians for misleading them on a non-existent issue.

It is, recalled that the GNECC in a press conference in Accra by Mr Kofi Asare, Chairman of the Coalition, on March 4, 2019, kicked against the Ghana Partnership Schools (GPS) Project scheduled for implementation in September.

The network, made up of more than 200 civil society organisations in pre-tertiary education, was of the view that the project was not the best approach to improve learning outcomes in schools.

But speaking to the Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday, the Director of Communication at the Ministry of Education, Ekow Vincent Assafuah said, the government was only seeking to strengthen partnership with other institutions to deliver quality education.

Among other things, he said that the partnership would curb indiscipline in the education sector and improve supervision.

Mr Assafuah noted that the government had never contemplated privatisation of schools in its 2016 manifesto.

He said that in 2018, when the Ministry met GNECC, the discussion was on partnership and not privatisation of schools.

Accordingly, page 108 of the party’s manifesto captured: “we would build an effective partnership with religious bodies, civic organisations and the private sector in the delivery of quality education. These partnerships also include the areas of management, supervision and training of teachers in their unit.”

He said the Ministry had constantly engaged with stakeholders on the partnership discussion, explaining that the position of the Coalition on the issue was disingenuous.

The Communication Director indicated that the president of GNECC sits on the Ministerial Advisory Board and therefore he has easy access to senior management for cross-checking information that may come his way.

On claims of non payment of capitation grant, Mr Assafuah said government had cleared two years outstanding arrears it inherited and that it had only two terms arrears to clear.
