Mother and son remanded for allegedly killing granddaughter

Date:

A 19-year-old trader from Fosu-Newtown who allegedly conspired with his mother to kill his two year-old daughter was on Friday remanded into prison custody by a Magistrate Court in Cape Coast.

George Kwabena Amoakwa, alias “Agenda”, and his 54 year old unemployed mother, Comfort Akyaa appeared in court together, whilst his wife, Alice Acheampong who had been in the relationship for three years, wept uncontrollably.

The two, whose pleas were not taken have been charged with murder and abetment of crime and the Court presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu, remanded them into prison custody to reappear on Friday November 22, 2019.

Prosecuting, Inspector Gilbert Ayongo told the Court that the complainant, Ms. Acheampong, mother of the baby girl resides at Fosu New-town with the two suspects.

He said on Tuesday, November 5, at around 0900 hours, the complainant and the baby visited Amoakwa at the Fosu station where he sells shoes.

The Prosecution said the baby cried out to be given to her father of which the mother obliged, after sometime her husband’s employer, one Mr. Dada sent her to deliver a pair of shoes to a customer at the Fosu Total fuel station.

Mr Ayon said upon her return few minutes later Ms. Acheampong was informed by Mr. Dada that Amoakwa had gone out to buy food for the baby.

The Prosecution said after waiting for hours the complainant followed up to their house only to meet the lifeless body of the deceased on a mattress.

Inspector Ayongo said strangely, the complainant was fiercely restrained by the two accused when she made an attempt to rush the baby to the hospital for medical attention so she was compelled to report the matter to the Police.

He said Police investigations on the baby’s body revealed finger nail marks around the baby’s neck and throat leading to the arrest of two.

The Prosecution said the Police are now looking for Amoakwa’s employer who is currently on the run.
