Monkeypox will be renamed by the WHO to remove the negative connotation associated with Africa.

Date:

Monkeypox is being renamed by the World Health Organization, which is collaborating with specialists to come up with a new term.

It comes after more than 30 scientists called for a “non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing” term for the virus and the disease it causes in a letter published last week.

They claim that referring to the virus as African is both misleading and racist.

In the last few weeks, almost 1,600 cases of the disease have been reported around the world.
