Mahama promises closer relations with assembly members

Date:

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has given the assurance that his next administration will work closely with assembly members to improve their role in governance.

He said assembly members were the first point of contact for the resolution of many issues in electoral areas, and therefore, required support from government to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
Mr James Agyenim, NDC 2020 Campaign Spokesperson, who said this a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, said Mr Mahama gave the assurance while addressing a meeting with the Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) at his office in Accra.
The former President observed that assembly members did not only attend to the day-to-day needs of the people, but also served as a community development agents.
He, therefore, pledged to design training programmes to improve their capacity and pay them monthly allowances to encourage them to do more for their communities.
The statement said the NDC Flagbearer also reiterated that he would ensure the completion of all projects that were abandoned including roads, schools and health facilities for the people to reap their benefits.
Touching on COVID-19,  Mr Mahama said he had called for the involvement of local community leaders such as chiefs, assembly members and opinion leaders in the national response plan to  stop the spread, but that call was ignored.
The result, he observed, was the woeful failure of the distribution of food relief packages and the poor level of awareness of COVID-19.
