Liverpool plotting to usurp Man Utd with summer raid on £30m target

Date:

Liverpool will reportedly seek to solve their defensive issues by making a summer move for a Serie A centre-half frequently linked with Man Utd.

Liverpool have endured a torrid defence of their title in a campaign that has been riddled with injuries.

Absences across the squad have hit hard, but the bulk of their long-term injuries have come at centre-back.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip are all currently sidelined. Furthermore, makeshift central defenders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are also unavailable through injury.

Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies were brought in during the winter window on loan and permanent deals respectively. However, question remain as to their long-term viability as starters.

Now, according to online publication SportsMole (who cite Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport), Liverpool have ‘made an enquiry’ for Man Utd target Nikola Milenkovic.

The Serbian, 23, stands at an imposing 6ft 5in tall. A fee in the region of £30m has been recently touted as being required to green light his exit from Fiorentina.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were described last week as being in ‘pole position’ to land the defender. Additionally, the latest report suggested Milenkovic was ‘open’ to moving to Old Trafford and would ‘push’ for a move if a formal bid were made.

That has apparently not deterred Liverpool. The Reds are said to have ‘held talks with the 23-year-old’s agent over a potential summer move.’

Ex-Red Shelvey slams Liverpool culture

Jonjo Shelvey Newcastle captain

Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey says that he had to “get away” from the uncertainty of his game time at Anfield.

Shelvey signed for the Reds from Charlton as the club transitioned amid Rafael Benitez’s exit.

The then-18-year-old arrived as a bright prospect and made 15 Premier League appearances in his debut season.

But after going on a three-month loan spell with Blackpool, he faced further struggles for minutes.

The midfielder only played 13 league games in the 2011/12 season upon his return from Lancashire. What’s more, he made a solid start to the 2012/13 campaign before appearing as a substitute in 14 of the final 18 top-flight matches.

As such, he decided to leave in the summer of 2013, moving to Swansea. Speaking to the Studs Up podcast, the now-Magpies man opened up on his feelings about his time at Anfield.
