Kumasi branch of SWAG inaugurated

Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has outdoored its Ashanti regional branch on Tuesday, 12 February 2018.

The ceremony recorded prominent personalities within the association, as well as personalities who have sporting activities at heart at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium Conference room.

SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah, Charles Osei Assibey, Professor Patrick Tumasi among others were in attendance.

The Ashanti Region branch becomes the second branch inaugurated after Volta Region.

SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah before making known the interim committee for the Kumasi branch highlighted on the benefits of being a member of the writers union and why Kumasi branch needs to be inaugurated.

“Kumasi is by extension is the destination of Sports in terms of Sports Journalism”. SWAG was formed as far as 1975 and for the last 44-years we have been organising year awards ceremony for Sports Men and Sportswomen. It is the longest ceremony awards in the country”.

“Way back in the days, the first President of the association was interestingly Joe Lartey, who was a sports commentator”, he said.

“SWAG is not only for the print media but for all to those who will ask why they should join SwAG. We are a group of professionals with a common identity, common agenda, and vision. It is always important to come together for solidarity, a sense of professionalism and educational purposes”.

“It is affiliated to AIPS and is very good to be affiliated because it offers a lot of educational opportunities to young sports journalists on educational programs outside Ghana”.

“Years back SWAG was an Accra based association because there was few sports Journalist at the time but know it has taken over this country”, he added.
