Call of Duty: WW2 is just a matter of weeks away, and we’re finally getting some more concrete information about the game’s Zombies mode. It’s no secret that this year’s installment of the franchise takes the series back to its roots, but it seems that this particular component is heading off in its own direction.
Sledgehammer Games, the developer behind Call of Duty: WW2, was founded by the two designers responsible for the original Dead Space. That taste for horror is on full display in the macabre action of the studio’s take on Zombies mode.
“The approach is, of course, rooted in [the studio’s] horror background, so it was a lot of fun to develop this new experience,” said Sledgehammer’s Jon Horsley in an interview with the PlayStation Blog. “Our goal was to make this the most terrifying Zombies experience we’ve ever created.”
This time around, Zombies mode is set in a small Bavarian village, in the latter period of the war. The Axis powers are on the back foot, and the plan is to create an undead army to help turn the tide.
The previously tranquil town is the site for ghoulish experiments and some truly twisted science projects. This time around, the zombies retain some of their military training, so players will come across enemies with various different specializations — flaming zombies and running zombies are two enemy types that Horsley mentions by name.
It’ll take lots of teamwork to survive the onslaught, but a mastery of the map will prove useful, too. There are various different traps that can be used against the zombies, like the sawblade that could be seen in the trailer for the mode.
Horsley promises that expert players are going to find both a considerable challenge, and plenty of hidden content. Sledgehammer doesn’t want to give too much away about the secrets of the new iteration of Zombies, so apparently it will be up to the fans to hunt down what’s concealed.
All will be revealed when the game launches in just a few weeks — but if Zombies fans need something to hold them over, Horsley did reveal that there are some clues hidden away in that recent trailer.
Call of Duty: WW2 releases on November 3, 2017 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
