Winneba (C/R), Feb 17, GNA – Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has applauded health workers for their sacrifices in managing victims of the cholera outbreak in some communities in the Central Region.
He gave an assurance that the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) would continue to do their best to save the situation, but it behooved on all to contribute their quota by ensuring cleanliness wherever they were.
Mr Akandoh explained that cholera, related to access to potable water and good sanitation, and could affect anybody irrespective of their status.
Mr Akandoh made the call at a meeting with stakeholders at the Effutu Hospital, where he was briefed by the management of the facility on the current situation of the outbreak.
He encouraged the health workers to continue to execute their duties to save lives.
The Minister’s entourage including the Country Director of World Health Organisation, Central Regional Director of Health and officials of the Ministry of Health in protective wears, paid the patients a visit at their wards and interacted with them.
They further toured the seashore where he saw open defecation and many households with their toilets connected to open gutters, which were choked with silt and plastic waste.
“We all must agree that there is too much filth in the system, we must change our lifestyle and stop using refuse dump sites and the beaches as places of inconvenience, stop dumping refuse in gutters and drains and quit other unhygienic practices, “Mr Akandoh advised.
He called for massive stakeholder collaboration towards the fight against cholera to save lives and put smiles back on the faces of the people.
