England captain Harry Kane praised Cole Palmer after the Chelsea player scored his first goal for the Three Lions.
Palmer opened the scoring for Gareth Southgate’s team against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the hour mark, when England was awarded a penalty for a tug on Ezri Konsa during a corner routine. Palmer was as cool and poised from the penalty spot as he has been for Chelsea, and England cruised to a 3-0 victory. Southgate had granted him three appearances leading up to the Euros, but this was his first goal for England.
When asked about Palmer’s form, Bayern Munich striker Kane said: “An unbelievable season. It’s never easy moving clubs as well, so to do what he’s done in his first season at Chelsea is a credit to him and obviously the team he was in as well.
“We’re very happy to have him and I’m delighted he got his goal there today. Of course, we’re going to need all of our players chipping in with important goals throughout the tournament in a couple of weeks so the more people feeling good, the better.”
Palmer came up through the ranks at Manchester City and played for Pep Guardiola’s first team as a fringe player for two years before he decided that a permanent move to Chelsea would be the best thing for the progression of his career. His decision paid off dividends as he became the main man for Mauricio Pochettino’s struggling Chelsea side, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 35 league appearances last season.
Palmer’s superb form has meant that he has earned the right to be called up by England for the upcoming Euros in Germany, and he may even be a starter for the Three Lions depending on Southgate’s preferences.
