Gyampo tells Akufo-Addo to deal with the expulsion of Dampare rumours quickly.

Date:

Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo, a prominent political scientist at the University of Ghana, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Nana Akufo-Addo to address the rumours surrounding the plan to fire the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Professor Gyampo’s comments follow the release of an audio recording of several top police officials speaking with a former Northern Regional Chairman for the NPP, in which it is claimed that the IGP was identified as a supporter of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Professor Gyampo emphasised the probable political repercussions for the NPP and the Akufo-Addo administration if they were to think of dismissing the IGP because of his competency in a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

He stated, “It would be politically suicidal for the NPP as a Party and the Akufo Addo government to think about removing the IGP for being too competent. But if this is not their thinking, why can’t they swiftly dissociate themselves from the rumours?”

The leaked audio, which has caused a stir in political circles, raises questions about the IGP’s impartiality and his role in the upcoming general elections, especially in light of the NPP’s “Break the 8” quest.

The phrase “Break the 8” refers to the NPP’s goal of securing a third consecutive term in office, a feat that has proven elusive for previous governments in Ghana.
