Ghana risks losing 1,200 jobs if challenges of Tema Port expansion are not addressed

Date:

Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has raised some concerns about the Tema port expansion project.

The Association is therefore calling on government to as a matter of urgency address the challenges before the commissioning of the first phase of the project in July this year.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the Executive Secretary of the Association, Samson Awingobit said local companies will be disadvantaged leading to about 1,200 job loses.

Mr. Awingobit called on government to dialogue with stakeholders on the way forward before the Terminal is ready for operations.

The expansion works which began in October 2016, is expected to have its first container berth completed and opened up for operations by the beginning of the 2nd Quarter of 2019.

When completed, the project will expand the capacity of the port to handle 3.5 million TEUs with Ghana significantly upgrading its container handling facility and attracting bigger vessels from the shipping lines.
