Former President Kufuor defends endorsement of Dr. Bawumia ahead of 2024 Elections.

Date:

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has dismissed criticisms over his endorsement of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, urging Ghanaians to rally behind the Vice President for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a campaign event held at the Ofori Panin Palace in Abuakwa South on November 27, Mr Kufuor reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP, citing his affiliation as a foundational part of his political identity.

The former president’s public endorsement has drawn backlash, with critics, including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kyerematen, suggesting that his status as a statesman requires neutrality in political endorsements.

Mr. Kufuor defended his stance, emphasising the importance of experience and wisdom in guiding his political decisions.

Reflecting on Dr Bawumia’s contributions during his tenure as President, Mr. Kufuor lauded his expertise, particularly in navigating economic challenges.

He credited Dr. Bawumia’s work as part of the Bank of Ghana team for playing a significant role in stabilising the country’s economy during difficult times.

Highlighting the upcoming elections as pivotal for Ghana’s progress, Mr. Kufuor encouraged voters to support the NPP, portraying Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as vital to advancing the nation’s development.

This latest development has sparked discussions on the role of former statesmen in active political discourse and their influence on Ghana’s political landscape.
