Five die in River Oti

Five persons are reported dead at Wasawasa, a farming community in the Kpandai District in the Northern Region, when the canoe in which they were travelling capsized on River Oti last Saturday.

They were said to be returning from a funeral at Nasandi, a community near Kpandai, when the incident occurred.

Their bodies have since been retrieved and deposited at the ECG Hospital mortuary at Kpandai for autopsy.

The deceased have been identified as Abochie Bigreni, 22; Tibisi Masonzi, 18; Tilacha Mandi, 18; Mamjo Soya,19, and Kwame Ndinba,15.

Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic last Saturday, the Kpandai District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Francis Akwasi Asante, said his outfit received a distress call about the accident on Saturday evening and deployed policemen to the scene.

He said on arrival, the policemen realised that a search party had been mobilised by the community to retrieve the bodies.

According to him, they were able to retrieve two bodies on Saturday evening, while the other three bodies were recovered Sunday morning.

DSP Asante said the police had since commenced investigations into the cause of the accident, adding that an autopsy would also be conducted before the bodies would be released to the deceased families for burial.
