ECG Recovers GH¢2.4m In Tema

Date:

The Revenue Protection Unit of the Tema Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has recovered about GH₵2.2 million from illegal connections at Afienya, Nungua, Tema, Somanya and Ada.

Zita Kyei-Gyamfi, Tema Regional ECG Revenue Protection Manager, made this revelation during a media encounter with management of the Tema Regional ECG Office.

She revealed that the anomalies were identified during the regular audit of all fixed meters.

Ms Kyei-Gyamfi said huge amounts of money are lost due to meter tampering, bypasses, unauthorised service connections, self-reconnection, among others.

According to her, the regular monitoring of customers’ premises would be sustained and continuously intensified to ensure that residents and institutions adhere to laid-down regulations.

The Revenue Protection Manager mentioned that an amount of GH₵1.8 million, representing 80 percent of the total figure, has so far been retrieved from the erring customers.

She indicated that 19 customers, who refused to pay after they were surcharged, had been referred to the court by the legal department of the company.

Kyei-Gyamfi cautioned the customers against the stealing of power, adding that ECG is backed by a Legislative Instrument to prosecute any person who engages in an illegality.

He urged the public to cooperate with the company to address the problems.

She entreated the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of people involved in power theft, assuring informants that six percent of all illegal units recovered would be paid to them.

The Revenue Protection Manager also appealed to the public to protect the assets of ECG.
