The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has presented a cheque for GH¢100,000.00 to the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, to support the government in its efforts to control and contain the pandemic.
The cheque donation was a total of the voluntary contribution from the GNCCI regional chambers in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tarkwa and Wa.
Nana Dr Appiagyei Dankawoso I, the President of the GNCCI, presenting the cheque at the Presidency, said the outbreak of COVID-19 had disrupted every aspect of human life; economic, physical, and mental well-being.
Businesses, however, were among the hardest-hit, which resulted in the shutdown of some factories, lay-offs, short-time working, redundancy and disruptions in the global value chain.
He commended the government for the drastic and decisive measures taken to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
“As the representative organ of the business community in Ghana, it is in our collective interest to work together and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19.
“On behalf of the Council, Membership, and Staff of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), I wish to present a cash donation of GH¢100,000.00 to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund in support of the COVID-19, fight,” he said.
Nana Dankawoso said the Chamber looked forward to engaging government and key stakeholders in finding innovative ways of supporting the business community in the critical moment, adding that, it remained committed to promoting and protecting commercial and industrial interests in the country.
“I urge our members and the business community to continue adhering to the preventive measures announced by the government and also make voluntary contributions to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund,” he said.
Justice Sophia Akuffo, the former Chief Justice and Chairperson of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, who received the donation, expressed gratitude to the Chamber for its support in tackling the national canker.
She the business community has been the hardest hit by the pandemic, but she encouraged them to support the government in all aspects to fight the respiratory disease and reverse the economy to normalcy.
