‘Cool heads are prevailing’ – says Wa MCE on recent flogging disturbances

Date:

The Wa Municipal Assembly says the insecurity in the area following the recent flogging of two lovers over their leaked sex video is being contained.

This follows the bail granted to three key suspects in the matter and the other 13 persons involved in an attack on the regional police headquarters.

On the back of this, Alhaji Issahaku Tahiru Moomen, the Municipal Chief Executive, says “there is every positive indication that this issue is virtually coming to an end, especially the aspect of rioting and vandalization in town.”

The Wa circuit court granted bail to all the three persons suspected to have been involved in the flogging. It also ordered the release of some 13 others who were alleged to be among some rampaging youth group that engaged in a riot to demand the release of the persons initially arrested.

Speaking on the latest development, Alhaji Issahaku Tahiru Moomen said calm is gradually returning.

“The security agencies are doing what they are able to do, the court has also taken its preliminary decision on the matter and the Municipal Assembly is talking to the youth to calm nerves so that, there will be no relapse in any security arrangement that is put in place”, he said on Eyewitness News.

All those who have been granted bail are set to reappear in court on Monday, June 13, 2022.

The three suspects initially arrested have been identified as Sidiki Osman, Bushiran Khigir and Issahaku Mahama.

13 out of the number who were linked to the disturbances after screening were presented to the circuit court but were released.
