VICE PRESIDENT Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) within the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency to come out in their numbers and vote massively for Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Kyerementeng Agyarko, during the upcoming by-election.
The Vice President made the call on Saturday, January 19, 2019, after he joined the Youth Wing and Ayawaso West Wuogon Parliamentary Candidate of the NPP, Madam Seyram Alhassan, to embark on a sensitisation healthwalk.
In a Facebook post after the walk, Dr. Bawumia said: “I expressed my profound gratitude to the constituents for massively endorsing the candidature of Madam Lydia and urged them to vote for her on 31st January, 2019, to continue the good works of the late Hon. Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko.”
The by-election has become necessary following the sudden death of Mr. Agyarko on November 21, 2018.
He is said to have died from gallbladder infection, and the Electoral Commission (EC), headed by Jean Mensa, has set Thursday, January 31, 2019, as the date for the by-election.
Meanwhile, one Bismarck Aborbi-Ayitey has filed a suit against the EC at the Supreme Court, contesting the decision of the EC to hold the by-election on January 31.
His argument is that per Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, a by-election is supposed to be held 60 days after a seat is declared vacant.
