Akufo-Addo picks Nalerigu as capital of North East region

Date:

Nalerigu has been chosen by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the regional capital for the newly-created North East region.

The decision by the President ends the confusion on whether Walewale or Nalerigu was going to be the capital of the North East region.

Speaking during the Presentation of the Constitutional Instrument (C.I 116) for the creation of the North East region at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, the president said: “Nalerigu has been chosen as the capital of the North East region.”

Starr FM’s Presidential correspondent, Wilberforce Asare, also reported that the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has been named as the caretaker Regional Minister for the North East region until a substantive minister is appointed.

The president is yet to announce the capitals for the remaining five regions created.

The creation of the six regions was a major campaign promise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 electioneering period.

After the NPP won the polls, a Commission of Inquiry, headed by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Stephen Brobbey, was instituted to ensure the creation of the region.

Accordingly, the new – Oti, Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East regions – were created.

Since the regions were created there has been massive jostling in some areas over which town should be made the regional capital.

In the Bono East area, there are full campaigns to have Techiman named the regional capital.

Some people and chiefs of the Nkoranza Traditional Area have come out to accuse the Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Dan Botwe, and his Deputy, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of sidelining them.

In the Savannah region which was created out of the current Northern Region, some groups have begun pushing for Damongo to be made the regional capital. Others are also campaigning for Salaga to be named the regional capital.

In the Ahafo area, four towns; Goaso, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Bechem and Kenyasi are said to be leading the race to be regional capital.
