Egypt dismisses head coach after AFCON elimination

Date:

Egypt fired its head coach after its chances of a record-extending seventh Africa Cup of Nations victory were crushed last week.

The country’s football organisation said on Sunday that Rui Vitoria, the Portuguese manager, had been terminated.

Egypt struggled throughout the competition, losing every game until being eliminated in the final 16.

An early injury to captain Mohamed Salah also affected their performance.

They were knocked out of the competition in a dramatic 8-7 penalty shootout defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo

Vitoria had been due to coach the team through to the 2026 World Cup.

Mohamed Youssef, a former Al Ahly coach, has been appointed as interim manager
