Getafe has reported Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham to La Liga for reportedly using a slur at Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood.
The England international midfielder played in La Liga on Thursday against Real Madrid’s local rivals in the Spanish capital. Carlo Ancelotti’s team won 2-0 in that game, thanks to a brace from Joselu, and are currently top of the table.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Bellingham may have a case to answer on the back of that contest after being caught on camera supposedly aiming a snipe at Getafe forward Greenwood. The Madrid star is alleged to have branded the Manchester United loanee a “rapist” after a coming together near the touchline that resulted in a combative tackle being put in, with Cadena SER claiming that said comment was reported to La Liga’s delegate in attendance after the final whistle.
According to Cadena SER, Getafe asked for the incident to be included in the match report and for the matter to be investigated. They are said to have requested that La Liga “take appropriate measures” if an offence did take place.
WHAT FORMER LA LIGA REF SAID
Former La Liga match official Iturralde Gonzalez told Cadena SER of what could happen from here: “You can be sanctioned if you really say that, but if Getafe wants to defend its player, what it can do is take the case to the Competition Committee. The League will do what it has to do, but they can appear at the Competition Committee with those images and accuse him of what he said.”
WHAT NEXT?
Greenwood – who saw allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive control dropped in February 2023 – is on a season-long loan at Getafe during the 2023-24 campaign. Parent club Man Utd are set to make a decision on his long-term future in the summer transfer window.
