Dormaahene urges Akufo-Addo to oppose BoG’s proposed $250 million headquarters.

Date:

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has requested that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo intervene in order to halt the development of a new headquarters building, according to the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II.

The Minority in Parliament has voiced strong opposition to the $250 million initiative and has threatened to picket at the Central Bank’s offices.

The Dormaahene said that given Ghana’s present economic circumstances, the plans to build a new headquarters are wrong.

On Thursday, a delegation paid him a courtesy visit while he was in the middle of a speech at his palace in the Bono Region’s Dormaa.

“We learned that the BoG is spending $250 million to create a new headquarters. It is roughly one-fourth of the amount we are asking the IMF for. The President needs to step in, please. He should meet with them, inform us that he is changing his mind, and do so.

According to Section 18 of the Right to Information Act (RTI), the minority caucus in Parliament has asked the BoG for seven days to provide information on the cost of its new headquarters, which is being built in Accra (Act 989).

The letter was signed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bawku Central Constituency, Mahama Ayariga, on behalf of the Chief Whip of the Minority caucus, Kwame Governs Agbodza.

“My name is Mahama Ayariga Esq and I am the representative of Bawku Central constituency in Parliament on the ticket of the NDC. Kindly provide information within 7 working days from the date of this letter,” he added.

The Minority is requesting information on the processes involved in the procurement of the land for the construction of the new headquarters building, as well as the names of consultants and project managers.
