Cecilia Abena Dapaah, a former minister of sanitation and water resources, sacrificed for the New Patriotic Party by quitting following her stolen money incident, according to Franklin Cudjoe, president of IMANI Africa.
He said that the former minister shielded the party from any unanticipated humiliation the NPP administration would experience.
The origin and planned use of the US$1 million, €300,000, and unidentified numbers of Ghanaian cedis that were reportedly taken from the minister’s home have drawn criticism from a number of organisations.
A story about two housekeepers who were prosecuted for allegedly stealing $1 million, $300,000 in euros, millions of Ghanaian cedis, and other personal items from Ms. Dapaah and her husband’s home went viral.
After the event, Madam Dapaah gave up her ministerial position.
The Special Prosecutor eventually placed her under arrest, and two of the former minister’s homes were searched. Afterwards, she was given bail.
“I think that the choice to leave was not just in her own benefit, but she probably sacrificed for the entire party,” Mr. Cudjoe said in an interview on Citi TV’s The Big Issue.
If you don’t take precautions, you might collapse when things of this nature happen because of the harm you are likely to sustain as a result of the information that is publicly available. Even if you haven’t done anything wrong, remember that we are all only human.
He praised the previous minister for leaving his position honourably.
“Maybe some pressures made her resign. Ultimately, she made the decision that she could save some sanity, for now, while investigations continue. Her decision to resign was welcomed. I don’t fault her.”
