Reece James’ father acknowledges that learning that Real Madrid was interested in his son left him “gobsmacked,” but he is adamant that he wants to stay at Chelsea.
James’ father, Nigel, acknowledges that he was surprised by the rumoured interest from Real, but he insists that his son’s main goal is to lead Chelsea rather than pursue a transfer abroad. At his boyhood club, James has made close to 150 appearances.
James Sr. commented on the The Beautiful Game podcast: “I was simply stunned. Reece is a fantastic player, so I’m sure most teams would want to sign him, but for the time being, I don’t see anything changing. I don’t read anything anymore because, yes, unless someone rings my phone or informs the people I work with what the situation is, you don’t take stuff seriously.

“He plays for Chelsea, so until Chelsea decides to sell him, anything might happen. If a club decides they no longer want to deal with you and for any reason wants to get rid of you, you must go. If they desire you… Since he was six years old, he has been there, and his goal is to wear the armband.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: James had a disappointing campaign in 2022-23 as knee and hamstring injuries severely hampered his minutes; he made just 14 starts in the Premier League as the Blues amazingly finished in the bottom-half of the table.
