Gyakye Quayson’s request for a stay of proceedings will be decided by the High Court on Tuesday.

Date:

On Tuesday, July 11, the High Court in Accra will rule on the request for a stay of proceedings in the case involving Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson.

The MP is being tried for forgery and perjury at the High Court in Accra.

In order to allow the court of appeal to hear its review application on a decision by the trial judge to hear the case on a daily basis, the lawyers for the beleaguered MP have requested for the court to suspend proceedings.

Tsatsu Tsikata, the team’s lead attorney, contended that any decision to not halt the proceedings would be prejudicial to the appeal.

However the application was rejected by the defence team, lead by Godfred Dame.

Godfred Yeboah Dame, the attorney general, has informed the Accra High Court that the request for a stay of proceedings made by James Gyakye Qauyson’s lead attorney, Tsatsu Tsikata, in order to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal “is grounded on irrelevant matters, distortion of facts, and confusion.”

The AG argued against Mr. Tsikata’s application, saying that it did not demonstrate any extraordinary circumstances that would justify a stay of proceedings in a criminal prosecution and that it was just intended to obstruct the criminal trial of the Assin North Member of Parliament.
