Akufo-Addo: I don’t know if there are Al-Qaeda members in Ghana.

Date:

If terrorist organisations like Al-Qaeda are present in Ghana, according to President Nana Akufo-Addo, he is not aware of it.

In response to a query from a New York Times reporter, President Akufo-Addo said he has no knowledge of Al-Qaeda members in Ghana, despite the possibility of terrorist cells in Ghana and the presence of visiting US Vice President Kamala Harris during a press conference on Monday at the Jubilee House.

“Is Al-Qaeda present in Ghana? I’m not sure. We don’t formally have any knowledge to that effect. It’s possible that there are existing cells and others in the nation, but the security services are closely monitoring those issues, and we hope that there will be no Al-Qaeda presence in Ghana.”

Ghana wants to manage its own security concerns without assistance from abroad, he stressed.

Without the assistance of foreign forces, he stated, “We want to be able to solve as many of our own security issues ourselves.”

As Ghana seeks debt forgiveness as part of the International Monetary Fund’s balance of payment support, Kamala Harris has said that the US will advocate on the African nation’s behalf with the Paris Club.

According to Mrs Harris, the US will help Ghana with all the support it needs to ensure that it scales through its current economic crisis.

“We welcome Ghana’s commitment to reform its economy for sustainable and inclusive growth. We support Ghana’s engagement with the IMF, and we will continue to push all bilateral creditors to provide meaningful debt reduction for countries that need it.”
