Buaben Asamoa: NPP will break the 8 despite EIU’s prediction of likely NDC victory

Date:

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa says the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is unfazed by the recent report by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) that tips the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to win the 2024 election with a flagbearer other than John Mahama.

According to him, the NPP is poised and confident it will break the 8-year cycle of change of political parties in government witnessed in Ghana since the beginning of the 4th republic.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Buabeng Asamoah said the governing NPP has performed far better than the NDC on all three major indicators and believes Ghanaians will consider that to vote.

“Indeed, not withstanding the presumed 8-year cycle, it is possible that we can break the 8 based on the quality of [our] leadership. [This report] shouldn’t be a headache… We have coined the phrase breaking the 8, and it is based on our leadership and our record. Happily, the records on those three indicators; employment creation, anti-corruption and infrastructure relatively in the 4th republic, we are far better than the NDC on all grounds,” he said.

But the EIU in its report cited the economic crunch, poor infrastructure and deep-rooted corruption and high employment levels under the current government as reasons for its conclusion that the opposition stands a better chance of winning the 2024 elections.

“Our baseline forecast is that ongoing public dissatisfaction with the slow pace of improvements in governance—such as infrastructure development, job creation and easing of corruption—will trigger anti-incumbency factors and push the electorate to seek a change. The NDC, therefore, stands a reasonable chance of winning the 2024 elections”, parts of the EIU report said.

But Buabeng Asamoa insists that the NPP has a superior record that is able to make it win the upcoming polls.

“If we are going into an election based on the quality of our leadership driven by our better record, we have a very strong, solid basis for what we are saying [that we’ll break the 8]. We, by breaking the 8 are telling the Ghanaians that don’t change because eight years has come, look at what you have benefited for the past 8 years and determine what has been in your best interest. You will find that you are better off with the NPP than the NDC,” he said.
