Akufo-Addo apologizes for ‘no harbour in Cape Coast’ comment

Date:

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has apologized to the people of Cape Coast for saying he never promised a harbour in the Central Regional capital.

Some residents of Cape Coast had been waiting on the government for the construction of a new harbour because the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised to establish such a facility in the area during the run-up to the 2020 general elections.

But their hopes were almost dashed after President Akufo-Addo in a recent interview said his party never made such a promise.

“The commitment was never to build a harbour; it was to build a landing site,” Akufo-Addo said on Cape Coast-based Eagle FM on Monday.

The comment by the President during his tour of the Central Region earlier this week generated controversy, as videos of the Vice President reiterating the promise from the NPP manifesto resurfaced on social media.

But in an interview on Peace FM on Thursday morning, President Akufo-Addo said his earlier comments about the Cape Coast harbour was a mistake.

He said his government is already working on a harbour at Elmina, and having one at Cape Coast as well.

“Let me confess, I made a mistake on the Cape Coast matter. Even with the mistake, we have to have a rethink. We cannot have a harbour at Takoradi, Elmina, and have another one at Cape Coast. But I have to apologize to the people of Cape Coast. Presidents are humans, and they can make mistakes,” he said.
