2016 may have been the twentieth anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, but we're still a few months away from the release of the series' twentieth movie.

Titled Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, the film appeared to be a retelling of Ash and Pikachu's first adventures—but a new trailer has changed all of that. Featuring brand new characters and several Pokémon from later generations, it looks like this movie will have a number of surprising twists to it.

While this video begins with familiar scenes from the first trailer, in which Ash sees the legendary Ho-Oh and bonds with his pal Pikachu, it doesn't take long before it veers off into brand new territory. The lovable fourth gen starter Piplup soon appears, we meet several never-before-seen characters who appear to be traveling companions of Ash, and Sun and Moon's Incineroar and the new Mythical Pokémon Marshadow also show up. There is even an elderly figure shown, and based on the familiar design of his hat, some fans are theorizing that this could even be Red, the protagonist from Pokémon Red and Blue.

Of course, not everything is new, which really only adds to the bewilderment this video is causing among the fanbase. The capture of Charmander, Metapod's evolution into Butterfree, and of course the ever-present Team Rocket all show up in the trailer, once again seeming to suggest that this movie is a retelling of Ash's first journey. Whatever the film ends up being, though, the trailer has certainly gotten people talking, so I guess it's doing its job rather well!

Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! is slated to release in July in Japan and in other territories later on, so hopefully we'll have some answers in just a few months.
